This American Life - Poultry Slam '99 - opera libretto in Italian... "became bigger than [a box of puppets]"... artifical distance that's strangely more inviting? In English, too easily grasped.

I wish there was a word for the kind of fan art that doesn't include image manipulation/collage and definitely not tracing/eyeballing official art. Emulating style seems okay to me, assuming the fan artist brings his/her own innovations to the style. But it's not tolerable past the point where the fan artist is borrows whole poses, compositions or panels or whatnot. It's plagiaristic enough for the fan artist to rip off other people's works, but even worse to poach upon the work of his/her admired artist. (Assistants, animators, licensed artists are a different matter, of course. They not only have permission, but there are professional expectactions to draw on model. >_>)

Tengu Party Illustrated - Unique art style. Thick and brushy -- nearly all of it done by the same kind of brush, probably. In the lulls between story peaks/reversals, I find myself wishing the art were prettier, but at the very least I can recognize the major characters (can't distinguish a few of the minors). I thought it'd enlighten me about tengu a bit, but I can't separate what's traditionally believed about tengu from the story's innovations. In this manga, tengu can eject their birdlike selves from their human bodies via the mouth and go feed (often on garbage). They can be killed in bird form. If they lose their human bodies, which they leave behind as corpse-like shells, they're stuck in bird form, I think. They can fly in their human bodies but don't sprout wings to do so.
Story: Shinobu is a tengu-in-training. Her master is haughty and despises humans, insults other tengu who try to blend in with humans but take advantage of whatever resources they have. He whisked Shinobu off to become a tengu on her first day of school, leaving a mud doll to live in her place so she's never missed. Despite never being educated, Shinobu's pretty sharp. Yes, she does briefly obsess over a dollhouse, but when she splits off from the Tengu Party (who're all fumbling around trying to find Mr. Z, the god of all tengu) to find out what became of her mud doll replacement, that's when the plot starts to engage me.

I remember a cartoon that I watched on either Nickelodeon or Sesame street... There was a snowman who made friends with a little kid. The little kid gave the snowman ice cubes to eat. The memory of that moment came to me as if from nowhere. Hella cute, but it also feels sad for some reason.

Marathoned all of Karin. Strange experience, watching an anime where so many (like 95%) of the principal characters are voiced by seiyuu I couldn't even identify two years ago. For future ref, Ren's flashback ep is 18; his roommate is played by FukuJun. Fanservice shot of him and Usui is ep 12.

On one hand, I've drawn pics of R making out with D and having Passionate Male Friendship moments, and on the other hand, R and D's sister J have this amazing relationship (a great deal of affection between them, many intersecting interests and sensibilities, great compatibility, and in one AU (that I don't really intend to read as AU-ish), actual romance). I think I'd like to have them do little song challenges with each other. Like switching iPods and selecting a song for the other to sing along to. They've even got an abstruse scoring system between them. ...Flash adaptation of this game? R and J standing side by side. Songs on R's iPod would be sung by J and vice versa. All a capella, and the player would have to guess the song/artist/whatever. The recording of such a project would kick ass.

What I don't get about Jyuuohsei is how do women protect themselves from the men who might try to use them as baby machines? Maybe a lot of the men are willing to kill a rapist (or one or more who're planning to), but wouldn't they quickly find themselves in a minority if enough of them have been rejected by a woman? Discontent breeds really fast, after all.

After reading the first few chapters of Jojo part 5... My impression of Giorno: "Super-hot, WTF! @_@" Jotaro's insistence on having him investigated, his Dio and Joestar qualities, the uncertainty I felt when he hustled Kohichi-kyun were the major contributing factors, . Once Giorno joined up with the mafia and Kohichi recognized his virtue, I can view him as a proper Joestar. >D; ...Gotta draw him sometime soon on the Joekaki board. >D >D
